THIS 3 X AA BATTERY HOLDER CAN BE EASILY INSTALLED IN ALL OF THE EARLY BALLY/ STERNS/WILLIAMS MPU'S. THE NYLON HARDWARE SUPPLIED HAS TWO 3/4" LONG THREADED STANCHIONS, FOUR 1/2" LONG SCREWS. TWO FLAT WASHERS. THE 2 FLAT WASHERS ARE USED ON THE 2 SCREWS GOING THRU THE BACK OF THE MPU TO ALLOW FOR A STRONGER FIT.

PICTURE SHOWS HOW BATTERY HOLDER IS ALIGNED (FOR DRILLING) ON THE BACK OF A TYPICAL BALLY (-17 & -35) MPU. ONE OF THE NYLON SCREWS IS INSERTED THRU THE HOLDER THRU THE NEGATIVE PAD HOLE LEFT BEHIND WHEN NICAD WAS REMOVED. THE TOP HOLE OF THE BATTERY HOLDER IS USED TO MARK THE MPU FOR DRILLING (THE OTHER 1/8" MOUNTING HOLE). MARK THE HOLE/ REMOVE THE HOLDER & DRILL THE 1/8" HOLE. FINAL MOUNT SHOULD RESEMBLE THIS:

THE STERNS MPU 100 INSTALLATION IS SIMILAR TO BALLY ABOVE BUT THE STERNS 200 IS DIFFERENT. THERE ARE 3 NICAD BATTERY MOUNTING HOLES ON THE BOTTOM CENTER OF A STERNS 200 MPU. THE ONE USED FOR THIS BATTERY HOLDER IS THE THIRD FROM THE RIGHT (CENTER MOST HOLE). REMOVE THE BATTERY HOLDER AFTER MARKING THE MPU. WHEN DRILLING THE 1/8" HOLE MAKE SURE IT IS DRILLED FROM THE BACK SIDE OF THE MPU- ABOVE THE HORIZONTAL TRACE THAT RUNS JUST BELOW YOUR MARK.

THE NEXT GROUP OF MOUNTINGS ARE THE LEVELS 6 AND 7 WILLIAMS CPU'S
THE EARLY 80'S WILLIAMS CPU'S CAME EQUIPPED WITH A BATTERY HOLDER THAT WAS SOLDERED INTO THE PANEL. IT BECAME THE CENTER OF MASSIVE ACID DAMAGE OVER THE YEARS BUT THIS BATTERY HOLDER CAN BE USED IN THE SAME AREA BUT IN A SAFER MOUNTING. MEASUREMENTS WILL BE NEEDED TO DRILL AND PLACE THE HOLDER EXACTLY SO THAT IT WON'T INTERSECT WITH ANY TRACES. THE FIRST PHOTO SHOWS THOSE MEASUREMENTS ON A LEVEL 6 CPU.
LEVEL 6

ON BACK SIDE OF BOARD- PUT A HORIZONTAL PENCIL LINE 2" UP FROM (AND PARALLEL TO) THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE BOARD (1 1/2" WHITE LINE SHOWN). NEXT, INTERSECT WITH THAT LINE 1 1/2" IN FROM THE LEFT EDGE OF THE BOARD (2" WHITE LINE SHOWN). THE RESULTING + WILL GIVE YOU THE APPROXIMATE DRILL CENTER. THE FINAL DRILL CENTER HAS TO BE JUST TO THE LEFT OF THOSE 2 VERTICAL TRACES SHOWN ON THE RIGHT OF THE 2" LINE. AFTER DRILLING THE FIRST HOLE- LOCATE THE SECOND HOLE BY USING THE BATTERY HOLDER AND A MOUNTING SCREW THRU THE BATTERY HOLDER AND THEN THE FIRST HOLE IN THE PANEL. WITH THE HOLDER SQUARED UP TO BOTH EDGES OF THE CPU, MARK THE OTHER 1/8" MOUNTING HOLE. REMOVE THE HOLDER AND CHECK THE MARK. IF MARK TOUCHES THE WIDE VERTICAL BATTERY TRACE- IT'S OK TO DRILL A HOLE TOUCHING THE SIDE OF THAT TRACE. BELOW IS PHOTO SHOWING FINISHED HOLDER MOUNTED HIGH AND DRY ABOVE BOARD.


THE POSITIVE (RED) WIRE IS SOLDERED INTO THE LOWER LEFT (+) PAD. THE NEGATIVE (BLACK) WIRE IS SOLDERED TO THE LARGE SQUARE PAD MARKED (-). NOTE THAT THIS LARGE SQUARE PAD PROVIDES GROUND FOR NEARBY IC5. IT REQUIRES SOLDERING ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CPU FOR COMPLETE GROUNDING.
LEVEL 7

ON FRONT SIDE OF BOARD MARK A HORIZONTAL LINE 1 1'4" UP FROM LOWER EDGE AND 2" IN FROM LEFT EDGE OF CPU. THIS WILL GIVE AN INTERSECTING + FOR THE FIRST MOUNTING HOLE. ON THE FRONT SIDE, USING THE BATTERY HOLDER AND ONE MOUNTING SCREW, SQUARE THE BRACKET UP TO THE EDGES OF THE CPU AND LOCATE/ MARK THE SECOND HOLE.

(+) POSITIVE WIRE (RED) GOES TO UPPER RIGHT PAD.
BATTERIES CAN BE CHECKED/CHANGED WITH CPU ON WITHOUT MEMORY LOSS.
